Trying to come up with some ideas for an upcoming evening or weekend? Why not explore all of the wonderful things that the area of Altona Meadows and the surrounds of Hobsons Bay have to offer! Located in Melbourne’s local government area of Hobsons Bay, living in Altona is an absolute delight. Here are our 7 favourite things to do in and around Altona Meadows.
Bring your furry friend to Altona Dog Beach
Altona is a beautiful coastal suburb, and one of the best sights you can find is just an 11 minute drive from Central Square: Altona Dog Beach, where the ocean meets some beautiful pets! Bring your dog down for a nice walk and a dip in the water, and stop at Central Square on your way to pick up some picnic food from one of the many altona meadows restaurants located in our centre. Altona Meadows beach is an off-leash area, meaning your furry pal can socialise with the other pets, enjoy the water and have a picturesque moment with you all in one place.
Take a stroll down Pier Street
Pier Street might be Altona at its finest, with a stunning and vibrant street lined with cafes, restaurants and dessert options, as well as a friendly open park area and immediate access to Altona Beach. The Altona Meadows cafe and hospitality scene is a local favourite, so whether you’re after a mid-morning brunch, afternoon meal or even an evening treat, you’ll be more than well covered. The area is often bustling, but particularly in summer when it gets nice and busy with everyone looking to enjoy the water and coastal walks.
Catch a game at Melbourne Ballpark
Melbourne Ballpark is Victoria’s premier baseball stadium, home ground to the Australian Baseball League’s Melbourne Aces. At home games, the stadium seats around 2200 of the most passionate and excited fans you’ll find, along with extra capacity at the hills on either side.
Located a very quick 3 minutes from Central Square, go and enjoy something new and exciting with your family at Melbourne Ballpark!
Get in the game at Altona Sports Centre
If watching sport isn’t enough for you, get amongst the action at Altona Sports Centre. Home to 10 full-sized playing courts, spectator seating and a large reception area, the centre hosts hundreds of thousands of people and playgroups in Altona Meadows every year, the majority of which are regular netball, basketball and volleyball players. Join a league or come for some casual play with your friends, and keep an eye out for the various holiday programs that run!

Enjoy some quality time at Cherry Lake Reserve
There are plenty of beautiful parks in Altona Meadows, but the picturesque views of Cherry Lake make it a standout location in our books. The views are only made more impressive with the beautiful parklands that surround and helpful facilities, like bicycle paths, picnic tables, barbeques and playgrounds. Stop by our favourite Altona Meadows shopping centre, Central Square, and pick up some fresh fruit and tasty treats for a picnic at Cherry Lake with family and friends. Kids can run happily, and there is even an opportunity to enjoy some fishing or canoeing on the lake itself.
Just 9 minutes from our shopping centre, there might not be a better spot for your family weekend than Cherry Lake.
Buy a bargain at Altona Meadows Farmers Market
The first sunday of every month, there’s nowhere better to be than at AB Shaw Reserve where the Altona Meadows Farmers Market is set up. The market is full of unique, friendly stalls that offer delicious fresh produce and food for all. Check out the nearby playground after a wander with your kids, or stay around to enjoy the warmth and friendliness of the local vendors and other shoppers. Feel free to bring your pooches too!

Find your next read at Altona Meadows Library
For kids and adults alike, Altona Meadows Library — one of five Hobsons Bay Libraries — has all the fiction and non-fiction you could want, along with a range of other materials and services. The library is staffed with passionate and helpful team members, ready to help you find whatever you’re looking for. Enjoy a variety of holiday and educational programs while you’re at it too!
While this is one of our favourite activities, you might have to wait a little — the library is temporarily closed for renovations to begin 2023, but books can still be borrowed from the pop-up site just a few doors down.
